Young Sicilians from Calascibetta
Young Sicilians from Calascibetta
Ermenelgilda Arengi & Mariano Mantegna
Mariano MANTEGNA, son of Vincenzo Liborio and Francesca Bonanno, moved to the United States of America from Calascibetta, Sicily, 21st April 1905 at the age of 19 years. He later married Ermenelgilda Arengi of Calascibetta, who arrived in the United States, 12th January 1914. They were married in Rochester, New York in April of the same year. They had four sons, Joseph, Frank, William and Alfred, the promoter of this Genealogical Research on his Family.

Rich with historical memories it stands high on the impregnable mountain, with the remains of its ancient walls rising steeply along its inaccessible sides, Calascibetta appears like a great fortress surrounded on all sides by cliffs and steep ravines.Russet and somber, it resembles a manor isolated from the world, looking over from an aerial balcony. The spectacle from there is of a stupendous grandeur. It looks as if Nature had it in mind to concentrate in the heart of Sicily all its strength and in the might impulse of creation expressed the highest peaks of its intimate ardor. It is as if a moment of appalling force it had lifted from the deep a whole sea of mountains and hills, suddenly halting their outburst toward the blue sky.
